A Jewish Film History of the Federal Republic, on view at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt
This collection accompanies the exhibition "Ausgeblendet / Eingeblendet. A Jewish Film History of the Federal Republic" at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt (14.07.2023 - 14.01.2024).
The exhibition uses exemplary films to trace the hitherto unwritten Jewish film history of the Federal Republic. It tells of the different and contradictory lives and careers of Jewish producers, directors and actors who made their experiences in film production between 1945 and 1989. The exhibition sheds light on their stories, with "Ausgeblendet / Eingeblendet" ("fading in and out" as a metaphor for the visibility or invisibility of Jewish perspectives in German film history. The question of visibility but also of the (foreign) attribution of Jewish identity is one of the central themes of the exhibition.
Our collection includes films that are directly related to the exhibition ("David", "The Passenger"), but also broadens the view to other Jewish life worlds in film and/or Jewish filmmakers. The collection was created in cooperation with the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, filmfriend is media partner of the exhibition.
