THE GERMAN FILM. 1895 until today

German films on the exhibition at the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks

It has never been attempted before, but now it has become reality: the historic blower hall of the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks has become the congenial setting for an overview of German film from 1895 to the present day. Large screens and monitors invite visitors to wander through a unique film landscape that achieved world renown with the expressionism and cinema of the Weimar Republic and reflects Germany's culture and history like no other medium. "The joint exhibition with the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is a challenge that we were very happy to accept. The location is incomparably inspiring and enables a completely new form of presentation of German film history. What's more, the teams from Völklingen and Berlin worked together perfectly - a fantastic experience!" Says Dr Rainer Rother, Artistic Director of the Kinemathek Berlin. The exhibition organised by the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks and the Deutsche Kinemathek provides the first comprehensive and immersive look at German film history. The multimedia show spans from the legendary "Winter Garden Programme" by the Skladanowsky brothers on 1 November 1895 in Berlin - two months before the Lumière brothers in Paris - to early silent films and sound films, to current formats and film productions from 2023. The films in our collection are directly related to the exhibits and are also discussed in detail in the comprehensive catalogue. The exhibition "DER DEUTSCHE FILM. 1895 to today" at the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks has been extended until September 15, 2024!
