Rough Road Ahead

Society/Romance, Germany/Austria 2015

GERMANY, 1968 Two teenagers in the German province: Martin dreams to become a writer, and to turn the world upside down with his literature. Ruby’s passion is music. Who ever heard Ruby, more correctly called Rosemarie, singing, knows that she has got what it takes to be a singer. Martin and Ruby meet secretly as often as possible, but with every new day this condition becomes more and more unbearable. Ruby’s father is a relentless tyrant, a devout Catholic, shaped by war and the reconstruction time morals. Therefore Ruby doesn’t take the plunge to openly stand by her love for Martin. In her father’s eyes, Martin personifies all the evil he wants to protect his daughter from. The noose is slowly tightening on them. Martin and Ruby run away from home and want to hide in Berlin. But this dream doesn’t last for long. Ruby ends up in a closed catholic home at the „Merciful Sisters“, Martin is being admitted to the infamous diaconal house of correction in Freistatt. Disconnected, Ruby and Martin from now on have to fight separately for their mental survival – in a world that is aimed at nothing but to break them. ‍ GERMANY, 1977 Ruby has become a mediocre successful moon/June Schlager music singer. She came to an arrangement. But her glamourous mask can only be maintained with alcohol and pills. Martin, in contrast, is unreconciled, self destructive, and violent. After the house of corrections he joined a militant group and ended up behind bars. They are still connected to each other by a love that is impossible to live, but also cannot be erased by nothing. Just before an important gig, Ruby is haunted by her ghosts. The past is not dead...
