Devil's violinist against her will: Not the gifted Italian violinist Niccolò Paganini, but the young, also very talented violinist Rose is at the center of this gothic horror film, which is set in a small castle in France. The young woman has inherited the estate from her recently deceased father, a composer (Rutger Hauer) living in seclusion - along with a violin sonata covered in mysterious symbols that was created especially for her. Together with her agent, Rose delves into her father's eerie past. The anxiety grows, and soon Rose makes terrible discoveries... Andrew Desmond's creepy film draws on the atmospheric images that Latvian cinematographer Janis Eglitis manages to draw from the gloomy little castle as a setting. The alleyways of Latvia, where the film was shot instead of France, are also picturesque. Rutger Hauer († 2019, "Blade Runner") can be admired here in one of his last roles.
