Two not-so-bright gangsters manage to rob an illegal poker game, relieve the players of their money and escape undetected. This has consequences: The card games are run by organized crime, which is supposed to be responsible for the safety of the gamblers. As long as the thieves are not caught, the games have to be suspended. Jackie Cogan (BRAD PITT), a professional killer and the best in his field, is hired to quickly restore normality. But things are not made easy for him. The bureaucracy and indecision of the syndicate get on his last nerve, a once sure-fire colleague (JAMES GANDOLFINI) turns out to be an unreliable drunk, and Cogan's habit of only killing his targets "softly", i.e. from a safe distance without having to look them in the eye, is an additional obstacle to carrying out his job...
