Just at Christmas: a power outage ensures that 20 people, spread across six elevators in different buildings in New York City, experience an unforgettable Christmas night. James (Jon Heder) is trapped with Randy (Max Casella), the HR manager who fired him just a few minutes earlier. Real estate mogul Harris (Patrick Stewart) has just left the construction site of his latest architectural project when his construction elevator gives up the ghost, leaving the heartless tycoon alone at a dizzying height. The musician Dawn (Cheryl Hines), on the other hand, gets stuck with her entire dysfunctional orchestra – so what else can they do but pass the time making music? Up-and-coming fashion photographer B. (James Roday) finds himself in a cubicle with his reclusive neighbor, attorney Ann (Julianna Guill). And then there's cynical doctor Dr. Roberts (Gary Cole), who was just about to take an elevator to an important surgery with his team to help a terminally ill patient. Over the course of the evening, the New Yorkers, thrown together by fate, experience funny and sad, moving and life-changing moments together.
