Eva Mattes

The actress shaped important works of the Young German Cinema

The actress Eva Mattes (born 14 December 1954) is one of the most distinctive personalities in contemporary German cinema. While she became familiar to television audiences primarily through her role as ‘Bodensee-Tatort’ detective Klara Blum, she made her mark on young German cinema in works such as Michael Verhoeven's Vietnam War film ‘O.k.’ (1970), Rainer Werner Fassbinder's ‘Wildwechsel’ (1972) or the classics ‘Stroszek’ (1977) and ‘Woyzeck’ (1979), both by Werner Herzog. She also worked in the theatre for many years, where she collaborated with directors such as Peter Zadek, Dieter Giesing and Heiner Müller from the 1970s onwards at her regular stage, the Hamburg Schauspielhaus, but also at the Berliner Ensemble and the Burgtheater. Since leaving ‘Tatort’ in 2016, she has appeared in Oskar Roehler's feature film ‘Enfant Terrible’ (2020), again at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and in readings and recitals. Incidentally, Eva Mattes took her first steps in the industry at an early age, initially as a dubbing actress: she lent her voice to the main character Timmy in the series ‘Lassie’ and also voiced the German version of ‘Pippi Longstocking’.
